"The Three R's of Parenting"

Not too long ago the three Rs of parenting - Respect, Responsibility & Resourcefulness - were the standards of good parenting. Parents were not measured by their children's grades in school because everyone knew that any child possessing these qualities should do their best in school. Parents were not measured by how many after- school activities they had to drive their children too either. Back then children came home from school, changed their clothes and found something to do. And back then parents weren't so involved in doing their children's homework or school projects. A science fair today in reality measures how inventive and resourceful Mom and Dad are. {Any judge of these events that sees such adult perfection should automatically disqualify anyting that was not done by the child.} Yes I've been guilty of this myself, but no more.

For the most part parents are too involved in the lives of their children. When two kids get mad at one another at school, too often the parents make matters worse. And while the children would probably have resolved the conflict and resumed their relationship, the parents are ready to call in an attorney or come to blows,

Children back then were to do their own homework, as they were to fight their own battles, as they were to stew in their own juices, as they were to lie in the beds they had made, and so on.

Back then, if you, as a parent succeeded at instillng in your children the three R's - and it would be obvious if you had then your parenting skills would be held in high esteem. Your friends and neighbors would say you "were doing a good job.'

No matter what your child grew up to become: a judge or a janitor, the three R's that you had instilled within him would all but guarantee that he would be an asset to the community.
