Remember the little rhyme we would say as children, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me”. Every so often you had to resort to that little rhyme in grade school to respond to a bully. You may not have been involved in bullying or teasing, but if you did, you hopefully outgrew it later in life, especially if you chose to become a Christian. As a Christian you exercised Christian restraint. But that was then! This is the social media age! And Satan as he always does has found a way to make a good thing a temptation for evil. Many people think of social media as an anonymous platform. You can almost hear Satan encouraging you to forego Christian restraint, saying, “Go ahead. You don’t have to keep your vengeance in check. Let it out now and get even. You can do it anonymously, no one will know”.
As such some Christians think that they can say any derogatory thing about anybody and really ‘get-em-told’ and no one will know you did it. As a Christian we need to remember the words of Paul, “Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one” (Col 4:6).
We need to be careful about what we put on social media because we are Christians in every aspect of our life and that either draws people to Christ or it drives them away from Christ. There is nothing wrong with using the internet or social media. Just make it ‘Saintsational’ instead of ‘Sinsational’.
