In Science we learn about light. We not only learn about the sources of light, but we also learn about properties of light as well. Something that produces light is said to be luminous. Examples of this are the sun, stars, and light bulbs. These however are not the only sources of light there are. The moon and the planets also give off light, but they do so by reflecting it, therefore they are non luminous. Luminous objects are seen by the light they emit, while non-luminous objects reflect another’s light.
We also know about how light interacts with matter. Light that interacts with matter is absorbed, reflected, or transmitted. Weather the surface is smooth or rough the light is reflected off it, but diffuse reflection provides light to places that are normally dark. Transparent materials allow the light to move through them, allowing all to see what’s inside.
In the book of Revelation chapter 21 verses 23& 24 we read that Jesus is the light, and that the saved should walk in His light. What kind of “surface” are we for this light? Do we absorb it, reflect it, or transmit it? First of all we need to absorb the light of Jesus. We need to become like Him, therefore we need to let him come into our lives. Secondly we need to reflect the light of Jesus as Jesus said that “you are the light of the world”, and that we should “let our light so shine among men that they may see our good works And glorify your father” Matt 5:14-16. We need to reflect the light of Jesus to the whole world, and let them see Jesus living in our lives. Thirdly we need to transmit our own light. The Apostle Paul wrote “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” Eph 5:8. As Christians we should be transformed into new creatures 2 Cor 5:17, and as new creatures we should have the characteristics of Jesus ourselves. We should be non luminous in the sense that we reflect Christ in our lives, yet we should also be luminous in that we should emit our own light. In other words we become the light ourselves. We should also diffuse reflection by shining the light of Jesus in those dark and hard to reach places Mark 16:15, 16. Last, but not least we need to remember that we are also transparent. Rather we like it or not we are transparent to the world. As Christians, people watch our manner of life, and how we conduct ourselves. We need to make sure that the world is seeing Christ’ light in every aspect of our lives. As a Christian am I a source of light to the world? Do I reflect the light of Jesus in my life?
