We should always take time out of our day to tell our mother how much she means to us and how thankful we are for all that she has sacrificed through the years for us. Most mothers want nothing more for their sons or daughters than to grow up able to live a better life than the one she had. Mothers do things for their children that few fathers care to deal with. Mothers want their children to always look and behave their best in every situation. They are never afraid to look their child in the eye and set them straight, no matter how many inches taller that child might be. Jesus loved His mother dearly as we see in John 19:25-27. He made sure she would be taken care of after His death on the cross. There is another passage however, that I want to bring to your attention that also shows the kind of love that Jesus had for Mary. In John chapter 2 they are invited to a wedding ceremony that is about to have an unexpected occurrence. All weddings are stressful no matter what part you play in the ceremony; from the parents of the couple about to share their “I Do’s” to the little girl who has been practicing for days tossing flowers from a basket. It is here during this joyous occasion that Mary makes a request of her son Jesus, “They have no wine.” (John 2:3) Notice the missing question mark after Mary’s statement. Like a mother pushing her son to do the right thing, Mary expects Jesus to understand what she needs Him to do and to do it. This request is followed by Jesus saying “Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My Hour has not yet come.” (John 2:4). I love this honest, pure, almost comical response from Mary in John 2:5 “His mother said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’” Mothers are good at giving tasks to their children and usually expect them to be done. Maybe Mary was thinking that way or maybe she knew her son, and she knew he would do the right thing. Jesus loved his mother deeply. He made sure that she would be taken care of after His death, but this moment shows that with this love came the same respect and honor that we should give to all mothers. Jesus once again shows us by His example that even the greatest among us owes a debt of gratitude to the one that we are blessed to call Mother.
