He was among the tombs. He could break chains and fetters and would cry out, cutting himself with rocks. Jesus healed him by casting the spirits into some nearby swine. For the first time in a long time the man was sitting clothed and in his right mind. Can you imagine how blessed this man was at that moment? Can you imagine the gratitude he wanted to offer to Jesus? He probably would have done about anything for Jesus! As Jesus was leaving he asked to board the boat with Him. Instead notice what Jesus says to him, “However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to Him, go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He has compassion on you” (Mk 5:19).
It is still happening today. When Christians remember all the Lord has done for them, they naturally tell others. If the elders were to announce that all mission work had been cut, most of us would not accept this as a proper or righteous decision. The command to take the gospel to the world (Mk 16:15-16) is not an option. But what if we were a part of a church that made little effort to reach the community around them, would we deem this to be just as wrong? I think we certainly would! What a blessing it is to be a part of a congregation where the elders, ministers and members all believe that the great commission doesn’t exclude our own community. You don’t have to be a preacher, teacher, or missionary, Just tell people what great things the Lord has done for you.
